REGROOVED Gold Coast: Skool Of Thought @ Never Land | Fri 12th April

If you had to list the top 10 hottest bassline breaks DJ/producers over the past decade, Skool of Thought would be a dead cert for a podium finish.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s spin back through the misty turntables of time, to the days when you weren’t worth your salt unless you had an Atari ST in the studio. We find our man flipping through some dusty vinyl in a Brighton record shop, when a chance meeting with a little known DJ by the name of Krafty Kuts produced a meeting of musical minds. Discovering a mutual love for the breaks, Skool Of Thought and Krafty Kuts set up the world-renowned SuperCharged club night in Brighton. As residents of the night, the two DJs played every week to an ecstatic crowd, in what is now a legendary Wednesday session on the south coast. As the club night exploded, demand for vinyl releases of the SuperCharged sound grew, and two record labels (SuperCharged & Against The Grain) were born.

Cementing a reputation for pioneering the bassline sound with the release of ‘Sound Check’ in 2001 with studio mate Krafty Kuts, Skool Of Thought found his niche and later went on to mix the now classic ‘Heavyweight Breaks’ CDs.

Following these early successes, the labels went into collective overdrive and soon they were celebrating signing the Freestylers to the Against The Grain stable. The release of Freestylers ‘Push Up’ single blew the roof off, selling over 100,000 copies worldwide, going top 10 in 5 countries and picking up a gold disc along the way. Skool Of Thought, found himself in charge of two of the most highly regarded breaks labels in the world.

Back in the studio and collaborating with Ed Solo, the pair turned out classic after classic with ‘When I Was a Yout’, ‘Love Your Life’ and ‘Babylon Breaks’ as well as a host of high profile remixes. This finally culminated in a scorching debut artist album entitled ‘Random Acts Of Kindness’ whipping up a press frenzy with DJ Mag, IDJ, Knowledge, 3D World and online forums the world over.

Today, Skool Of Thought spends most of his time in Australia where he regularly DJ’s at events including Good Vibrations, Laundry, Villa, Brown Alley and more.
