Hey Ghetto Funkers!
Well we are back in Vancouver after an amazing week at the Shambhala Music Festival which had to be the biggest and baddest ghetto funk throwdown to date! It was amazing to see so many talented producers & DJ’s from all over the globe come together and do what they do best in front of thousands of dance happy fans! We had the pleasure to finally kick it with some of the international Ghetto Funk fam like Slim Goodgroove, Basement Freaks, and Mooqee for their debut Canadian appearances as well as kicking it with our friends Pimpsoul, Busta, Slynk, Nick Thayer, Ali B, Jon H, and Frank from All Good Funk Alliance making their return to the festival, and of course all our Canadian homies like Stickybuds, Bryx, and Jpod whose sets have become a yearly fixture in the Fractal!
In addition to our Saturday evening set in the Fractal Forest, we also had the honor of helping to kick off the entire festival on Thursday afternoon at the Rock Pit stage right after one of our favourite Vancouver DJ’s Timothy Wisdom rocked the place with MC Dash from the Rootsellers. We debuted some of our new tunes to a massive crowd of thousands and had our new Sax Player join us on stage too! Immediately after us, one of Canada’s top party rocking turntablist’s, Skratch Bastid, took the stage to keep the goodvibes rolling. It was an incredible way to kick off the weekend and Skratch Bastid also happens to be the first to kick off this week’s MixTape Dig!
We ran into the Scratch Bastid a month back at Beatstreet Records here in Vancity but had not yet had a chance to see him throwdown live. His reputation proceeds him as the set was filled with a ton of slick cuts, creative mixing and had some serious entertainment value! Which brings us to his new mix, The Entertainer. This mix shows why Skratch Bastid is clearly one of the most entertaining DJ’s out there. Packed with timeless classics, custom edits and some hilarious samples and shoutouts, this one is sure to get your ears smiling!
Next up we have another solid mix from Marc Hype & Dejoe. “Versions” is a one hour mix featuring only cover versions of classic soul & funk. Marc Hype & Dejoe are two well known diggers from Berlin who took a deep look in their boxes and came up with this stunning feel good mix. From reggae riddims to blockbuster funkbreaks to latin grooves & disco extravaganza, there’s something for everybody in this !
And our ghetto funk styled pick of the week comes sent in to us from Brisbane, Australia, from a certain “Dastardly Kuts” aka Dion Hunt. His mix is stacked full of funked up party style breaks from the likes of Slynk, Krafty, Askillz, Pimpsoul, and Featurecast, and will definitely satisfy your sunshine or late night party needs.
Do you have a new mix you want to get out to the masses? Send it our way and if we “Dig” it , we will add it to our weekly posts!
* Please note we are looking for mixes that have REPLAY VALUE or promo mixes that feature original productions and include download links! We will avoid posting mixes in the same week with similar track listings and we will be posting mixes of various genres and styles. If its funky, groovy, hippity hoppity, dubstepy, drum&bassy, downtempoey, or just plain rockin the fuck out, then send your suggestions to [email protected]
Till next week, happy hunting ghetto funkers
