Hey Ghetto Funkers!
Apologies for the late post this week, past few days were a bit crazy as we flew out to Alberta with our homey Stickybuds to rock the final outdoor music festival of the summer for us. Then it was straight back home to the coast for some other gigs here this weekend. I know Bestival is also in full force this weekend in the UK, so hopefully the mixes in this weeks dig will help with your Sunday evening/Monday morning recovery from what sounds like another big end of summer weekend around the globe!
Okay, so first up we wanted to remind you again about the new Ghetto Funk Mixtape Contest running this month! This is your chance to get some recognition and have your mix featured on the blog for thousands to hear, as well as to pick up some great prizes like Ghetto Funk Wax, Slipmats, and Funk Hunters Apparel! Once again, here’s all the contest details. We encourage everyone to get involved and be creative, other than a general theme to get you started, there’s really no restrictions on how you have to create your mix:
– Submit a 10-20 minute mix that carries the theme “Evolution of Funk.”
– We encourage you to get creative. Use samples, vocal chops, and multiple genres or styles of music. Your mix does not need to be dancefloor orientated, but should also not put the listener to sleep 😉
– Record your mix using any tools you need.
– Send a private soundcloud link to [email protected] with the subject “Mixtape Contest”
– All entries must be submitted no later than September 30th. The winners will be announced and featured on the blog during the 1st week of October.
And now back to this week’s DIG:
In an age of digital distribution, online sales charts, and an endless array of free download sites, we wanted to pay tribute this week to some DJs who have dug a little deeper in order to craft their mixtape – embracing the days of actual crate digging to find some tracks that may not already be on everyone’s radar – and standing out from the crowd with a unique tracklist and tasteful vibe!
Off the top we get mad funky with a 1 hour mix from DJ Free Kee hailing out of Germany. This dude has some serious skills on the decks and his party flavours are ripe for the picking! Bad ass b-boy funk breaks and a ton of dope acapellas and remixes fill this mix. If it doesn’t get your head bobbin, then its probably time you sit-down and get your head checked by that senile grandma of yours!
Next up, if you’re not familiar, let us introduce you to THE GAFF Coming from the flatlands of Saskatoon, Canada, this guy is an absolute beast on the decks! If you were at Shambhala this year, then you might have caught his epic beach set on Friday or destroying the Fractal Funk jam on Sunday playing all 45’s! His Fascinating Rhythms mix was recorded live and blends a wide range of rare funk gems, afrobeat, latin joints, and eclectic contemporary boogie! Just give this half hour mix a listen and also be sure to checkout his Soundcloud for a ton of free edits and remixes to see what we are talkin’bout. Gaff, we salute you as you clearly know how to hunt that FUNK!
To finish off this weeks dig, lets change up the vibe and get a little deeper. “Deep Thaw” is a mix put out earlier this year from DJ DRM & Captain Planet. Reppin’ the Bastard Jazz Label out of NYC, these guys have put together a beautiful 1 hour mix that has logged quite a few plays on our iPods! Last weekend we were on the road with our Homebreakin’ Records amigo Neighbour… we had a 4 hour late night drive on our return to Vancouver and it was this mix that essentially kept us alive to get us home safley from another outdoor BC party. Deep Thaw takes us on a mind melting journey through some gems off the Bastard Jazz label as well as some other great labels such as Lovemonk, Warp, & Wax On Records! Boogie meets house meets latin meets your extended good music family! Yup, Its a reunion up in this mix… and of course your grandma crazysauce is in the house!
A reminder again to get involved in this months mixtape contest – All the contest details are at the top of this DIG!
Till next week, happy hunting ghetto funkers
